Brass, Zinc or CNC: Which Championship Belt Plate Is Right for You?
The metal you choose changes how sharp the detail reads, how heavy the belt feels and what it costs. Here is what actually separates the three.
Most people choosing a championship belt start with the design. It is usually the wrong place to start. The metal decides more about how the finished belt looks and feels than the artwork does, and it is the single biggest factor in what you pay.
Here is what actually separates the three.
Brass
Brass is the entry point. It is soft enough to etch cleanly, light enough to wear comfortably over a shoulder for a long night, and the cheapest of the three to work.
The trade-off is depth. A standard etch on brass produces detail you can see clearly at arm's length but which flattens out under close inspection. For a gift, a first belt, or a design that is mostly lettering and flat shapes, that is completely fine.
Choose brass if you want a real metal belt on a real leather strap without paying for detail you will not notice.
Zinc
Zinc is die-cast rather than cut, and it holds a much deeper etch than brass. That extra depth is what lets a plate throw a genuine shadow, and shadow is what makes relief read as three-dimensional rather than printed.
This is where most serious replica work sits. If you have ever picked up two belts and found one obviously sharper without being able to say why, the difference was usually etch depth.
Choose zinc if the design has fine detail — scrollwork, lettering with serifs, textured fields — and you want it to survive close inspection.
CNC and HD
CNC plates are machined out of solid stock rather than cast from a mould. There is no mould to soften the edges, so the cuts come out crisp and the recesses come out deep. It is the closest you get to a screen-accurate replica.
It is also the heaviest and the most expensive, for the obvious reason: you are paying for machine time and for the metal that gets cut away and thrown out.
Choose CNC if accuracy is the point — a display piece, a collector's belt, or a flagship award where somebody will absolutely pick it up and study it.
What about the plating?
Plating and base metal are separate decisions, and it is worth understanding why they interact.
Genuine 24k gold plating is applied over a polished base. That polish is doing real work: plate over an unpolished surface and the gold sits on top of every scratch underneath, so the finish looks flat however much gold you use. This is the difference between a plated belt that keeps its depth and one that looks tired within a year.
Beware anything described as "gold coloured" or "gold tone" without the word plated. That is usually lacquer, and lacquer chips.
